If we aim to create authentic experiences that prepare our students for 21st -century skills, then we need to consider designing assessments to incorporate AI-generated content. Think about how using AI tools might facilitate students’ learning and prepare them to engage these tools in their personal and professional lives thoughtfully. Create assignments that ask students to connect course content with current events and or personal experience – experiential or dialectical learning. Currently, AI technologies have a hard time effectively connecting the dots between such sources of knowledge. Furthermore, ChatGPT can generate content that is not directly copied from any existing source.

Given that ChatGPT generates fundamentally unique text, it’s challenging for SafeAssign to detect it. It looks for exact matches or very close similarities to flag content as potentially plagiarized. By understanding and simulating human-like text patterns, ChatGPT can generate text on a wide array of topics with surprising depth and accuracy. Some people might use it to quickly create information for their school work or paraphrase their sentences to sound better. Every time I submit a paper through this system, I’m teaching myself to be more original and careful with sources. The tool accurately identified six out of 16 AI-generated texts but failed to identify three more.

Of course, the development of AI-detection is going to create an arms race of finding ways to outsmart that detection, as well.
